This post is a collaboration of quick thoughts for a possible Phoenix Hexapong Tournament. Nothing set in stone yet but the ball is rolling. This is good news for anyone in the Phoenix area that is already familiar with Hexapong.
Not sure what Hexapong is? Here's something that was posted here a while back about this hexagonal, multi-player table tennis table. You can also contact Guy Allen at the official Hexapong website.
As I have said in the past, this table tennis table is not your average playing surface. It's Hexagonal shape can be converted back into a traditional square shaped table when needed. When the game is played by experienced table tennis pros, the Hexapong design will ensure that the game play is unique and challenging. All you table tennis wizards out there in the table tennis world should check out Hexapong.
Hexapong The NOT Table Tennis Tournament
"I'm determined to get Hexapong to be a game worth playing!
-Guy Allen of Hexapong
The tournament will be called, "Hexapong The NOT Table Tennis Tournament” and is planned for the end of the year so that any and everybody can enjoy the winter climate here in Phoenix. Right now, it looks as if there might be three main events in the tournament. Those events are as follows.- Cutthroat Singles
- Cutthroat Doubles
- Team of Three
The tournament will be open to anyone that wants to play, regardless of skill and geographic location. Because of these tournament requirements, Mr. Allen has begun brainstorming a method for separating the recreational players from the competitive table tennis players that participate in the the Hexapong tournament.
Hexapong The NOT Table Tennis Tournament official rules
FIRST, all players will have to play a (3) game
qualifying round of Cutthroat Singles. From three games, players with
the least accumulate points will be placed in Group “C”, rating for
group “C” will be 1000 to 2999. The next level up will be Group “B”,
rating 3000 to 5999. The last group will be Group “A”, rating 6000 to
9000. This will establish a rating system for future events.
SECOND, each prospective group now has an idea of how players can partner up with others for
Cutthroat Doubles and Team of Three. Cutthroat Doubles and Team of
Three will be played the table tennis traditional way with partners
having to alternate hits and played for only one point per rally
(Competitive Method of Play for those that are familiar with the two
methods of play).
This could be very interesting not only to play but
to watch too. Anyone wishing to play Xtreme Singles and or Xtreme
Doubles will be given the option to do so. A minimum numbers of players
will have to be determined to establish a draw worth posting.
THIRD, a possible venue to host the Hexapong The
NOT Table Tennis Tournament might be a commercial building with a cafe in it
where the cafe owner will plan on offering a $2.00 discount on food orders in
addition to free parking.
FOURTH, is the subject of entree fees and tables (Hexapong tables only). This is where Guy needs some input before anything is final. Here are a few important details that he needs to work out to ensure a smooth and fun tournament.
How many Hexapong Tables would you think I would need in order
for this event to be worth participating in?
How much of an entry fee
is enough and should additional fees be collected for the Xtreme games?
For players wanting to play in this event a membership fee into the
“U.S. Hexapong Association” (USHA) will be collected and used for prize
money. Entry fees would have to be large enough to cover the cost of
getting a T-Shirt to commemorate the event and still have enough to
have cash prizes for each event that is played.
At what number of
entries does an event turn from a one day event to a two day event?
LAST, I'm working on how to get sponsors to be able to fatten the prize money
for the winners of each of the following events. Cutthroat
Singles (Groups “A”, “B” & “C”), Cutthroat Doubles (Groups “A”, “B”
& “C”), Team of Three (Groups “A”, “B” & “C”) and possibly
Xtreme Singles (Groups “A”, “B” & “C”) and Xtreme Doubles (Groups
“A”, “B” & “C”).
Is there anything further that the organizers of the Hexapong tournament should look into or be aware of for properly executing this tournament, besides a mental institution?
