International regulations for competition table tennis balls
When playing in an International table tennis competition, regulations say that the table tennis ball must be of a certain brand and type. Approval must be given by the International Table Tennis Federation.
This post briefly describes some of the criteria and tests that are used by the ITTF for approving table tennis balls that are used for International play.
Table tennis ball diameter & weight
The diameter of a table tennis ball must be 40mm.The weight of a regulation table tennis ball is 2.7 grams.
Table tennis ball color & stamp
An international competition table tennis ball shall be white or orange with a matte type finish. On every approved table tennis ball there's a stamp that shows the ball manufacturer. That stamp must not cover an area greater than 280mm (squared). The stamp can be made of one or two colors just as long as the stamp remains the same for all balls of that brand.Bounce test
Bounce is calculated and measured by mechanically releasing the table tennis ball onto a steel plate. Using a digital camera with a mm scale in the background allows the ITTF to capture digital pictures which they then evaluate to calculate the rebound height of the ball.International Table Tennis Federation
All brands of table tennis balls that are used in International competition have to be in compliance with ITTF regulations.
Hopefully you gained a little bit more of an understanding about the tests and criteria which are applied to table tennis balls by the ITTF. Information contained in this blog post was inspired from the ITTF's technical leaflet T3 for 40mm table tennis balls.
