There are many table tennis players out there searching the Internet for good instructions, tips, and suggestions on the topic of table tennis tables, specifically the table tops and what kind of wood is used when making them.  This post will provide some of the basic information about a few of the types of wood used when making table tennis tables or ping pong tables.

If you've just begun thinking about what it would take to make your own table tennis table and what types of wood are used for making a table tennis table you can use the information found here to help you make a smart decision.  I won't go into details about the wood used to make table tennis tables like all the names that are out there and where you can get them at, but I will list a few kinds.

Before you buy, build or invest in a table tennis table

One of the first things that came to my mind had to do with the playing surface of table tennis table.  I wondered what types of wood were they made out of and why those types of wood?  Continue reading and I'll explain the why first.

The first thing any table tennis player that's thinking of buying or building their own table tennis table should know is.....

  • Do you want an indoor, outdoor, or a table tennis table that is made to function in both indoors and outdoors?

Table tennis table top measurements and wood thickness

When buying or making a table tennis table out of wood you should always want a table that's ITTF and USATT approved.

  • The international measurements for a table tennis table in size is 9 ft long by 5 ft wide

The thickness of the wood you're using as your table tennis top should be of the correct thickness.  Not having a table tennis top with the correct thickness will decrease the quality of a table tennis table as a whole, especially in tables that are located outdoors.  The thicker the wood is, the better the wood will resist warping.

  • A table tennis table top made from wood should be at least 3/4" thick to prevent warping and to ensure bounce consistency over the entire surface of the table.

When it comes to table tennis tables that are made of wood, there are a few different types of wood that the big companies like Stiga, Joola, and PaddlePallace use.  Here are the most popular types of wood used to make regulation table tennis tables.

  • Fibreboard (indoor use only)
  • Chipboard  (indoor use only)

Those are the two most popular and most widely used types of wood used for making table tennis tables used by the biggest names in the table tennis industry.  Remember that a table you purchase from a table tennis table manufacturer versus making your own table will in most cases be a much better table in terms of the truest possible bounce and the evenness of consistency of the table tennis ball rebound.

I'll also note that some world class table tennis table models that are made from fibreboard or chipboard will be professionally treated multiple times and then coated with a varnish to bring out a glossy finish that'll also provide the perfect table tennis setting for playing competitively.
